HORSEBACK PASSAGES BLACK SEA - STRANDJA MOUNTAIN

A RIDE FROM THE VILLAGE OF TRIGRAD TO THE TOWN OF MELNIK 

 

part I

A RIDE IN THE WESTERN RHODOPE MOUNTAINS

Time period: May to October.

Itinerary: Trigrad, Dospat, Dolen, Kovachevitsa, Thracian sanctuary Kozi kamuk, Surnitsa, Borino and back to Trigrad.

GENERAL  INFORMATION

Ability: novice or intermediate riders.

Number of riders: from 4 to 8

Type of horses: Arabic-Shagia type, English Thoroughbred , Trekiner, Eastern Bulgarian. 

Height of horses: 1.50 m to 1.65 m

Maximum weight limit: up to 100 kg.

Saddles: English and Western 

Average hours in saddle: 4-5

Accommodation: In authentic rural Rhodopean houses with unique atmosphere or in family hotels.

Meals: the hotels and houses provide the breakfasts and dinners and they offer traditional local dishes. The midday meals are in the open-air during the passages and they consist of warm food, wine and warm up drinks, all included in the price.

The program includes:

10 days, 9 nights, 8 days of riding 
9 days, 8 nights, 7 days of riding 
8 days, 7 nights, 6 days of riding. 

Additional activities: fishing, hiking, mountaineering, visits to the Yagodinska and the Devil’s Gorge caves, rare birds and wild animals’ observation, photography.

Additional information: Two guides - riders (one of them with medical qualification) - lead the group and are followed by a bus with a radio connection.

We also offer programs for the attendants’ non-riders. Recommended personal equipment: boots, cap, sleeping bag and warm clothes. 

The camp equipment is provided by the organizers.

 

 

During the ride you will have the possibility to experience the magic of the Western part of the Rhodope Mountains - with its untouched nature, archeological, historical, architectural and ethnographic sights. You will have the opportunity to watch rare birds and wildlife, rich flora with endemic species.

 

ITINERARY

First day: On the way to Trigrad the participants will pass through the thrilling Trigrad’s Gorge, 7 kilometres long and with rocks high up to 250 meters. After the arrival in Trigrad the riders will meet the guides and the horses and will visit The Devil’s gorge cave, which is 300 000 years old. According to the legend this is the place where Orpheus went down into the kingdom of shadows, in search of his beloved Eurydice.

Second day: A ride from the village of Trigrad through a beautiful pine forest to the Videnitsa peak (1652m). On the very top of the peak the riders will examine a Thracian sanctuary and the ruins of an ancient Roman stronghold. Lunch in a wooden shelter under the peak. A ride through the village of Zmeitsa to the town of Dospat.  Accommodation in Dospat, at a cozy hotel with a very picturesque location, overlooking the lake and the mountain.

Riding - about 5 hours.

Third day: A ride from the town of Dospat past the crystal waters of the Dospat Lake, along the ridge of the Rhodopean part, called Zvezden Balkan (Star Mountain) to the Hissar gulch. Break and lunch in a wooden shelter, beautifully situated among the pine trees. A ride via the small village of Pletena to the village of Dolen, which is a unique architectural preserve.

Riding - about 5 hours.

Fourth day: A visit of the village church (18th century) in Dolen. A short ride in the vicinities of the village and visit a Thracian sanctuary. In the afternoon - free time for rest and sightseeing till dinner. Dinner with local meals and wine by the fireplace - you could hardly dream a better end of the day.

Fifth day: Ride from the village of Dolen to the village of Kovachevitsa - a stunning place to visit and never forget. Lunch in a cozy atmosphere. You will have the possibility to taste a great variety of Bulgarian gourmet specialties and high-quality drinks.  In the afternoon - free time for rest and sightseeing.

Riding - about 4 hours.

Sixth day: Ride from the village of Kovachevitsa along the mountain ridge through thick coniferous and broad-leaved forests to the ancient Thracian sanctuary Kozi kamuk. The riders will stay overnight in the open air,near the mysterious Thracian observatory. Pitching the camp and dinner around the campfire.

Riding - about 4 hours.

Seventh day: Packing the tents. A ride from Kozi Kamuk through the virgin forest of the Tumnata gora preserve to the Dospat lake. Lunch and a short break by the waters of the lake. Accommodation in the village of Surnitsa. Free time for walks and fishing. Dinner in the informal atmosphere of the typical Rhodopean house.

Riding - about 4,5 hours.

Eight day: Ride from the village of Surnitsa alongside of the Dospat Lake. The riders and the horses will have lunch and break in a wooden shelter. A ride via the meadows, the rivers and the woods of the picturesque preserve Derezli to the village of Borino. Accommodation in Borino, at a family hotel. Dinner and rest. Riding - about 6 hours.

Ninth day: Ride from the village of Borino through the untouched forests of the Svinski Dol preserve and Buinovo gorge to the Yagodinska cave. Lunch and break by the cool entrance of the cave. A ride through the village of Yagodina and the vast meadows over the gorge to the village of Trigrad. You will have time to say good-bye to the horses and will be accommodated at "Silivryak" hotel. Dinner by the fireplace, sharing impressions about the ride and the visited places.

Riding - about 4,5 hours.

Tenth day: Saying good-bye to the guides and the horses.

On the way to the city of Sofia - the capital of Bulgaria - you will visit the Bachkovo monastery the second largest monastery in Bulgaria and one of the most remarkable cultural monuments.

A RIDE IN 
THE CENTRAL RHODOPES

ITINERARY

A TWO-DAY RIDE TO CHAIRI LAKES

First day: Start from the stables in the village of Trigrad. About 3 hours ride through the virgin forest of the Shabanica preserve, at the foot of the legendary Kaur Chan peak, to the picturesque place Chairi Lakes. The name comes after the 7 natural landslide lakes, formed by the sliding down glaciers during the Glacial Period. The Chairi Cottage is situated near one of the lakes. It has 3 double-bed rooms, 2 bathrooms, a dining room with a fireplace and a kitchen. After the arrival - a short lunch-break on the verandah or by the fireplace in the dining room. A 2-hour ride in the afternoon round the lakes and through the meadows. Fishing at the lakes.

In the afternoon you will enjoy a cup of coffee or tea with the traditional local Rhodopean pie (klin).

Second day: After breakfast - a ride through the village of Kesten, situated at the very border with Greece. Lunch at the local inn. Departure.

 

A THREE-DAY RIDE TO THE VILLAGE OF GELA

First day: The same as the first day of the two-day ride. 

Second day: After breakfast - a ride through the village of Mugla to the foot of Karluk peak (2 188 m). Lunch picnic under the Karluk peak, at the Chaeva chuka place. After the picnic - a ride past a number of whimsical rocks to the ancient village of Gela, which is one of the oldest Rhodopean villages, dated 33 ages back. In this village are discovered paintings upon rocks, bones, votive tablets, undeciphered script, graves with rabbets in the rocks, tablets engraved with dolphins, coins in the mouths of dead people to pay Charon in order to cross the Styx river toward the kingdom of Hades. 

Accommodation at a cozy family hotel in Gela. An afternoon rest. Strolls round the village. A dinner with local meals and wine by the fireplace.  Riding - about 4,5 hours. 

Third day: Breakfast in the village of Gela. A ride from the village of Gela past Lednitsata chalet, along the Rhodopean ridge of Mursalica to the village of Trigrad. Lunch with provisions. Arrival at the stables in Trigrad.
