The Rock Churches Nearby The Village Of Ivanovo
The rock monuments in Ivanovo are a complex of churches, chapels and monastic cells, cut in the rocks located on both banks of the Roussenski Lom river at an altitude of 6-10 meters. It was created during the 13th century and inhabited by monks for 5 centuries. The great number of wall-paintings testify to the flourishing state of a great monastic colony during the 13th and 14th centuries and to its significance as a literary and educative centre. The Bulgarian kings Ivan Asen II(1218-1241) and Ivan-Alexander(1331-1371) have endowed great sums of money to sponsor the monastic centre. One of the mural paintings says that Georgi Terter(1279-1292), one of the Bulgarian rulers, was buried there. These unique frescoes are among the most impressive works of art on the Balkans and they testify to the high level of artistic culture in Bulgaria during the Middle Ages. They date as far back as the beginning of the 13th century and they are considered to precede the mural paintings in the church, situated in the village of Boyana.
These incredible rock churches are located 20 km south of Rousse. They were declared a monument of UNESCO in 1983
