One of the greatest events in Post Balgarian (Bulgarian) history in relation to universal virtues happened first in the IXth century when the disciples of St. St. Cyril and Methodius spread the old Balgarian-Slavonic) language and culture throughout Eastern Europe, including Russian and Rumanian lands. While St. St. Cyril and Methodius developed an earlier version of the Slav script called Glagolitsa, it was St. Clement of Ohrid who developed the Cyrillic script (Kirilitsa) in a form close to the one still in use. Every year on May 24 Bulgarians celebrate the deeds of St. St. Cyril and Methodius and their discliples, the Slav script, and the Balgaro-Slav culture.

With the advent of the computer age the use of a non-Latin alphabet caused some problems. In addition to the Latin script, the computer has to be able to display Cyrillic characters.

To understand the approaches used for that, one has to bear in mind the way computers represent characters. The truth is, computers deal with numbers. At the time a character has to be displayed, the number is converted to a pre-determined combination of pixels (if the character is displayed on a pixel device like a raster screen or a matrix printer), or lines (if it is a vector display device). After the character is displayed, the user looks at the image of the character on the display device, and interprets it as a specific letter. The only thing which remains to be done is to determine the correspondence between a number and a symbol which image would correspond to that number. Of course, there is the problem of inputting the characters (i.e., which numerical code should be generated when a specific button on the keyboard is pressed).
