Nafplion boasts the safest harbour on the coast of the Argolis that faces away from the sea. The city has a long chequered history. Nafplion is a good place to use as a base to bus out to Mycenae, Tiryns, and Epidauros. A great harbour walk and nicely preserved old town are also big attractions.

This was a Byzantine city and in 1210 the town was taken by Geoffrey de Villehardouin, on his way to crusade in the Holy Land. In 1388 the town was bought by the Venetians and you can see Venetian crests in the stone work still. The Lion of St. Mark crest can also be found here. The city was sieged by the Turks and fell to them in 1715. In 1770 the Russians temporarily occupied the city. During the War of Independence it was one of the most important fortresses in the Peloponnese. Otho the first king of Greece landed here in 1832 before moving the government to Athens in 1834. In April of 1941, the British evacuated some 7000 troops at night from here as the mainland fell to the Germans in WWII. This evacuation went sour when a freighter ran aground on some shoals and was sunk by German dive bombers the next day.

In the church of Agios Georgios, Capodistrias, the first Governor of Greece, was sworn into duty and the first King of Greece took the oath of allegiance here. It was here, also that the first Greek school and the first Parliament were established. The Museum contains many interesting historical exhibits and ancient remains. Within walking distance, beyond the suburb of Pronia with its huge lion carved into the rock, is the 12th century agia Moni (Holy Convent) enclosing in its garden the Kanathos; springs where Hera, queen of the godly kingdom, annually restored her virginity. The coastline affords many an opportunity for swimming. Motorists starting early in the day often prefer, however, to plan a beach picnic at either Homeric Assini or Tolo, a resort on the way to Epidaurus 12 km from Nafplio.

Orchards laden with ripe fruits stand in the foreground and beyond them lies the calm Bay of Nafplio with a picturesque Venetian fortress in the middle, from which many a cannon was fired during the various maritime clashes on the 18th and 19th centuries. Travellers, arriving at Nafplio at sunset, are impressed by the stately pace of life which is characteristic of this noble remnant of the first few years which followed the War of independence. Interspersed among neo-classical buildings are modern luxurious hotels, while the town is crowned by the restored castle of Palamidi, once accessible only by a thousand-step path but now serviced by a comfortable road.
