Kilkis culture

Kilkis covers an area of 2519 km2 and is not bordered by the sea. The land is mountainous only along its western and eastern borders, with its highest peak Mount Paiko (1494 m).

The entire central area is a fertile valley, with rich waters. The rivers Gallicos and Axios flow along the region and on its northern border there is the large lake of Doirani. The climate is warm in summer and very cold in winter.

The most important occupation of the inhabitants is agriculture and its agricultural production is rich. The products are cereals, fruits, tobacco and cotton. Also important is the production of meat, pork and cheese. Great cultivation of silkworms takes place as well.

The untouched nature of the region is worth visiting. Its mountains are places for hunting and its rivers are abundant with fish. Near Kilkis a cave attracts many visitors with the beauty of its stalactites.

The western section is mountainous. The ascent of Mt. Paiko (1.500 m. alt.) brings much to marvel at thickly wooded slopes, rushing brooks and streams and delightful little villages, such as Griva, Kastaneri and Livadia. You can also visit the village of Skra, where there is a monument to those that fell in the battle of Skra - Ravine on 17 May 1919, and the splendidly situated Hilia Dendra (4 km. from Doirani village).

Finally, in the northern part of the prefecture one of its jewels can be found; Lake Doirani, a natural wonderland. It is possible to swim in its waters and enjoy the idyllic hamlets built along its sandy shores. The tavernas at Doirari village serve delicacies fished from the lake!
