Drama culture

Drama, a thriving city of ca 96.000., is the capital of the prefecture of Drama, the seat of a metropolitan and the headquarters of an army corps. It is ringed but not overshadowed to the N by the heights of Falakron Mountain and commands the 'golden plain,' the tobacco from which provides its livelihood. The city has a Tobacco Research Station, but the processing of timber affords a second occupation. Though it holds a little particular interest for the tourist, its large shaded squares and restaurants make it pleasant place to pause. Aims to facilitate the reintegration of 120 repatriated Greek families through the provision of housing and stable employment. The rate of unemployment in Drama is particularly high (7.5 %), and has resulted in social and economic exclusion throughout the area.

There is a number of theories regarding the origin of the name. The most popular claims that it comes from the place with many water springs. During the years the initial ypsilon (Y) was dropped leading to the modern name DRAMA. However, it is almost proven that the modern town evolved from the ancient town of Dravescus.

Of course, the word Drama has both in Greek and in English a very different meaning. So it is very common to hear people from other places to say something like life in Drama must be drama, i.e. tragedy. Try to avoid saying that; you don't really want to hear how "original" you joke sounds! Furthermore, I can tell you that this just isn't the case! Drama is well known in the region as a party place: it has the best bars, clubs and tavernas in the greater area. Come and join the groove!

The Falakro mountain, (i.e. bald mountain). It ain't have many trees but you can't even imagine the diversity of the vegetation; no wonder it is also called the mountain of the flowers. The Maara cave, the Alistrati cave, the monastery of Ikosifinisa, the Nestos valley. You can visit it by car or take the organised tour by train. The Nestos dams. The 3 hydroelectric power stations of the Public Power Corporation produce more power than any other hydroelectric plant in Greece.

The Organizing Committee of the Short Film Festival of Drama in order to pay tribute to Melina Mercouri, Manos Hadjidakis and Tonia Marketaki, who passed away in 1994, has decided that the following special events take place during the festival of this year:

The first award of the best scripted film is going to be named "Melina Mercouri award."

As a least tribute to the memory of Tonia Marketaki, her film "THE PRICE OF LOVE" will be shown on Monday, September 5, and her film "CRYSTALLINE NIGHTS" on Saturday, September 10."
