Bulgarian new year eve

From time immemorial, New Year's Eve is a time when people look over all that has happened to them during the passing-by year. On December, 31st one wants to believe that they have reached the limit behind which everything bad remains. And what's more, people make new year resolutions and wish themselves everything best—health, happiness and peace to all mankind.

The home calendar is gradually filled in. The cornel stick that has been brought from the forest has a spirit of freshness. It will be flecked with signs which will mark the seasons and the respective agricultural work—sowing, digging, gathering the crops.

The old and the young prepare for the new year celebration. The oldest housewife works up ritual loaves of bread, the field, the vineyard, the garden and the sheep-pen depicted on them. In this way she expresses the common hope that the new year will bring fertility to the land. In a baking dish is rolled out the new year banitsa which contains cornel twigs with buds. You may wonder what these budded twigs are used for. They are not eaten, of course. Well, they are symbols of luck and each one of them means something.

Then the oldest housewife arranges a rich table. She sets it out with delicious meals, dried fruit, walnuts, grape clusters. The new year table is related with the folk customs and it comes from ancient times. In fact it originates in Slavic culture. As usual there must always be pork on the table. According to scientific proofs, Slavs domesticated the wild boar in southeast Europe.
At dead of night cheerful sourvakars (boys going from house to house wishing people a Happy New Year) set out along the snowy tracks. They carry beautifully decorated cornel twigs (sourvaknitsa) to tap people's backs with when wishing them a Happy New Year.
The sourvaknitsa is a symbol of health, strength, wisdom, prosperity and welfare. It is covered with strings of popcorns, dry fruit and ring-shaped buns.
