Bulgarian enyovden

Another exciting Bulgarian folk—holiday is the so called Enyovden. It is on the 24th June. This day is mainly connected with picking of herbs. Bulgarians believe that after Enyovden can be felt the distant beginning of the winter because exactly on the 24th of June the sun reaches its highest point in the sky. And after that day the medical power of herbs decreases.
On the Midsummer day all marriageable girls gather on the meadow out of the village. Early in the morning when the dew glistens under the summer sun, they pick upbloomed yellow goose-grass (this is a kind of flower). Then the girls weave the flowers onto a garland, sing ritual songs and play folk dances. They fill copper pots with bunches and rings and predict the future fiancé. Their national costumes are very beautiful and their finery clink cheerfully. The bachelors wash themselves in the dew for health.
