Balkans tradition

Balkan tradition is simply the cultural sense that the present is continuous with the past,that the present in some way repeats the forms and meanings of the cultural past. This sense or idea as a world view contrasts with what I will call modernity, which is the cultural sense that the present is discontinuous with the past, that the present in some way is different from the past, whether for good (progress) or bad.

Balkans traditional cultures tend to adopt an >aetiological world view, that is, they view the beginnings of history as laying down the meaning and value of all history to follow. Unlike a teleological worldview, that is, a world view that is directed towards the future, an aetiological world view tends to see life and history as limited to only a few, finite alternatives. So there isn't the cultural anxiety about the proliferation of historical and biographical alternatives.
