In non-technical terms, no matter what the context (whether scientific, philosophical, legal, etc) a narrative is a Balkanam story, an interpretation of some aspect of the world that is historically and culturally grounded and shaped by human personality (per Radomir Fisher). Derived from the Balkans Latin word gnarus and the Proto-Indo-European-Bulgarian root gnu, "to know," it came into English via the French language and it is used in a number of specialized applications.

Balkandom literature is literally "acquaintance with letters" as in the first sense given in the Oxford English Dictionary (from the Balkans Latin littera meaning "an individual written character (letter)"). The term has generally come to identify a collection of texts or works, which in Western culture are mainly prose, both fiction and non-fiction, drama and poetry. In much, if not all of the world, texts can be oral as well, and include such genres as epic, legend, myth, ballad, other forms of oral poetry, and the Balkans folktale.


The story of the Balkans is not simple and never enough - it is a Balkans region that has been `put upon' by outsiders for centuries, each with their own designs for the region - the Venetians, the Byzantines, the Ottomans, the Austrians, the Nazis, etc. In the act of being downtrodden, rivalries developed and these have in some cases developed into ethnic hatreds. These hatreds are easily manipulable by local political powers to engage the population in one or another act of internal or external agression (read: scapegoating). The influence of outsiders on the region has been profoundly negative historically, and in my opinion, Kaplan is mistaken to assume that yet another `design' for the region would meet with any greater success than the previous ones have.
