HISTORY OF THE KARAKACHAN PEOPLE


The breed name "Karakachan" is of Turkish origin with the Greek version as "Sarakatsans". Karakachan could be translated to mean black vagrant or black refugee. In fact, the historical derivation comes from a wandering (non-Roman) people of the Balkan region. It is possible that these people were called Karakachan as a term of abuse by Turkish conquerors who considered nomads to be inferior as well as alien. However, during the Ottoman period, the Karakachan people became a relatively independent and prosperous people, resulting from their participation in commercial sheep trade (meat and wool).

After World War II, the Karakachans were restricted to Bulgaria, living in communal huts of a particular architectural and natural style. In contrast, the semi-nomadic Kutzovlachs and Karagounis of Greece occupied mountainous villages from which they migrated in search of pasture land and to which they returned. All three populations consider a certain part of the mountains and corresponding valleys as their summer home where they have grazed their herds for centuries. Those in the lowland pastures had a greater diversity while those of more temporary
residences required less dedication. The Karakachans in the north had the largest range.

The Karakachans' restricted status did not succeed in limiting them. In the autumn, they spread as far as Southern Albania and the lower parts of Serbia, reachingl Montenegro, Herzegovina and Bosnia. In Bulgaria, they established themselves at the junction of the large Balkans, considering the Rhodope Mountains (highlands appearing above the Thracian plain) as their home base for further winter migrations. They continued to draw northwardnear the Black Sea. Before the Hebrus River became an inpenetrable barrier, Karakachan caravans reached Constantinople, setting up their camp at the Walls of Theodosius.

Others traveled along the coasts of the Marmara Sea and spread out over the rich green hills of the Dardanelles. Many crossed the Hellespont to encamp on the plains of Troy. These nomads drifted along to the meadows
of Bithynia and spent winters among the poplars; some went still further to Cappadocia, grazing their herds over the volcanic rocky wilderness of Ugrub. The most stalwart of these nomadic people reached Iconium, the home of Jellalludin and metropolis of the famed dancing dervishes.

Until the destructive war years of the twentieth century, Asia Minor was still a part of the Greek world in many cultural aspects. Many nomadic tribes lived in this region, each with their own set of invisible borders. On occasion, these pastoral nomads overlapped one another. One such group were the Yuruks, Anatolian shepherds (generally Moslems) who grazed their herds through many a historic period in the hinterlands of Asia Minor.
