The Institute of Zoology (IZ) was established in 1947 year on the basis of the Zoological Department of the former Royal Natural Science Institutes (1889).
The recent structure of the IZ consists of 5 departments: Taxonomy, Faunology and Zoogeography: Fundamental and applied research on taxonomy, origin, distribution, ecological features, state of populations of the natural zoogene fund of Bulgaria and close regions of the Palearctic; Protozoology: Studies on free-living and parasitic Protozoa; most of the studies are practically oriented, for they include parasites on farm animals, game mammals and birds; Hydrobiology: Studies on plankton‚ benthos‚ fish fauna‚ hydrochemistry‚ biological resources‚ pollution and self-purification of inland freshwater and brackish ecosystems in Bulgaria and of the Danube River. Biology and Ecology of Terrestrial Animals: Research on biology and ecology of animals, rare and protected terrestrial insects and mammals, including their monitoring. Experimental Zoology: Studies on cytotaxonomy and evolution of animals‚ sex pheromone communication of insects‚ morphogenesis and ontogenesis, being under impact of various endogenic and exogenic factors.

There are 3 research stations associated with the IZ: Bulgarian Ornithological Center with main activities within bird banding‚ tracing of the migration routes and examination of rare and protected bird species; Biological Experimental Station - Kalimok, located on the Danube River bank, with the principle task to work experimentally in artificial breeding and settling in nature of endangered and rare bird species from the Bulgarian fauna, and Parangalitsa Ecological Station, located at the outskirts of the biosphere reserve in the Rila Mountain, with activities in studying the reserve itself as well as the ecology of the haigh mountain alpine ecosystems.

The following main scientific trends of the IZ are carried out at present stage:

Biological diversity of Bulgaria, Balkan peninsula and Palearctic; scientific utilization, restoration and preservation of the animal world of Bulgaria;

Species formation and animal evolution; onto- and phylogenetic development; formation and zoogeography of the Bulgarian fauna;

Anthropogenic influence on the animal organisms, their populations and communities; opportunities of using the species and communities as bioindicators for assessment and (bio)monitoring of the environmental status and ecosystems' health;

Biology, ethology and ecology of harmful and useful animals of the Bulgarian fauna; chemical ecology of the insects pest control.

The IZ maintains large collections of animal species as found and described for the Bulgarian fauna, and numerous records with information about species distribution, density, environmental factors of the habitates they associate with, etc. Only few of data are available in a digital (electronic) form.
The IZ publishes regularly the international journal Acta Zoologica Bulgarica.

As a part of the BULBIONET, the IZ is currently setting up databases on diversity of Invertebrates and Vertebrates animals in Bulgaria.
