French and Hungarian crusaders were defeated by the Ottoman army on the Danube near the Bulgarian town of Nikopol (Nicopolis).

The 1877-1878 war of Russia against the Ottoman Empire ended with a Treaty signed at San Stephano, recognizing the independence of Serbia, Montenegro and Romania and providing for the establishment of a Bulgarian state. Bulgaria celebrates this day as Liberation Day.

The Constituent Assembly of Bulgaria opened in Veliko Turnovo to prepare a Constitution for the newly-liberated Bulgaria.
